World Press Freedom Day – is celebrated on May 3rd every year
The theme for this year’s event is – “Media for Democracy: Journalism and Elections in Times of Disinformation”.
According to the International Federation of Journalists – in 2018 alone, at least 94 journalists were killed.
Today is set aside to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom;defend the media from attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
According to the International Federation of Journalists-the most dangerous countries for journalists in 2018 were Afghanistan with 16 fatalities and Mexico with 11, followed by Yemen with 9, Syria with 8 and India with 7.
The Fijian Media Association will be holding a Forum in Suva this afternoon
Association Secretary-Stanley Simpson says the Forum will be a great opportunity to hear direct from the Editors from the various media outlets in Fiji. He says the Association has about 250 members.
