Timely, effective, and consistent services to fishermen in the Central Division will certainly be boosted with the opening of a $300,000 duplex quarters at the Wainibokasi Fisheries Service Center.

In opening the quarters Prime Minister, Honourable Frank Bainimarama said that the effective management of our country’s 1.2 million square kilometres of ocean is vital and that officers of the Ministry have a vital role to play in that mission.

“My Government is dedicated to supplying the resources you need to succeed in your mission to sustain, our ocean ecosystems for generations –– a mission I also serve on the world stage, as part of Fiji’s push for the sustainable management of our oceans, as well as seas far beyond our horizons,” said Mr. Bainimarama.

“So I’m delighted to be here today at the Ministry of Fisheries’ Wainibokasi Service Center, where we are delivering two major upgrades to the lives and careers of the staff –– upgrades that will allow them to better service coastal and riverine fisheries for the benefit of Fijians in Tailevu and Rewa.”

“With the comfort and security of proper housing, these staff can focus on what matters most –– serving the fishers and coastal communities that depend on them. I hope that Fijians in Rewa and Tailevu take full advantage of this newfound access to the Ministry at your doorstep, and seek advice on how you can tap into the many fisheries resources your Government provides,” added Mr. Bainimarama.

The Wainibokasi Fisheries Service Center and Ice Plant provide services to the 31 tikina’s in the Tailevu and Rewa Provinces who have a total of 66 fishing grounds.

It also serves as an Emergency Operation Center during natural disasters. The housing of officers on site will ensure greater support to disaster response and relief efforts to the nearby communities especially along the Tailevu/Rewa coastline during sporadic spring tides or flash floods.

With a total population of 156, 479 living in around 196 villages and settlements, both Tailevu and Rewa provinces can expect quality service delivery today and into the future.
