FISHERIES officers in the Western Division celebrated World Fisheries Day with villagers on Vio Island, Lautoka.

The celebrations began with coral and tree planting before an awareness session was carried out.

Eskys, fishing gears (hooks, lines and fishing reels), wet suits, masks, snorkels, reef boots and gloves were also handed out to the Women, Men and Youth Groups in the village which will certainly enhance their livelihoods as they depend on the ocean for their income and food security.

A total of 1400 mangrove seedlings were planted today as well as 440 coastal tree species and 400 coral pieces of Acropora species.
