Villagers of Vatulele in Nadroga breathed a sigh of relief yesterday when the Prime Minister Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama visited them with relief supplies which included shelter and hygiene kits, and food rations.

Vatulele Island, which has four villages, was severely-affected by #TCHarold with 81 houses completely destroyed and another 180 partly damaged.

Prime Minister Bainimarama, in his address, thanked the people of Vatulele for demonstrating their resilience and taking the initiative to rebuild their homes after the cyclone.

The Head of Government assured the islanders that his government would assist wherever possible to help them build back better.

Prime Minister Bainimarama also visited the Vatulele Health Centre where he met with the health officials and discussed with them some priority needs of the facility.

Following this, the Prime Minister visited Vatulele District School.

Four teachers’ quarters were completely destroyed and two partly damaged. Also, one classroom block was partly damaged.

Meanwhile, Fiji-born US business tycoon and Fiji’s Honorary Consul in San Francisco Mr Jay Singh also donated $10,000 worth of food rations to the villagers.

Mr Singh, who recently bought the Vatulele Island Resort, is also willing to assist the islanders further.

His food ration donation is part of a $50,000 relief assistance he has set aside for the villagers of Vatulele.

Prime Minister Bainimarama also handed over the food rations on behalf of Mr Singh to the villagers today.
