Twenty six households in Nadovu village, Naitasiri will now access clean and safe drinking water after the commissioning of their new water project today.

Officiating at the event, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Disaster Management and Meteorological Services Hon. Jone Usamate said every Fijian has the right to clean and safe drinking water that is enshrined in the Fijian constitution.

“Government, through the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) is prioritizing access to clean and safe water, it has set aside in this current financial year a total budget of $27,000,000 for water schemes in the rural areas in Fiji.”

“This project is no different and the $71,000 spent by Government to make it possible is money well-spent. The one-unreliable water supply to Nadovu village will now be a thing of the past.”

Minister Usamate believes that accessing safe and clean drinking water for Fijians is absolutely fundamental to our future development and for the prosperity of our people.

“Accessing clean water is more than a building block of development; it is the rock solid foundation upon which a community can grow and prosper.”

“Every Fijian deserves to live with security and happiness that only clean water can provide; water that can be used for drinking, cooking, washing and keeping ourselves clean.”

An emotional 89 year old Elenoa Dani said today was one of the happiest days for the village of Nadovu as we finally can drink from taps.

“Before we would get water from the streams and boreholes but we had to boil them and strain them so that we would not get sick. There were challenges but are thankful to government for providing us with this accessibility to a safe and clean water source.”

The project includes newly constructed dam and brand new 10,000 gallon Ferro cement tank, this tank holds up to around 45,000 litres of water. Also part of the project were the installation of 12 new showers and 12 new stand pipes with slabs.
