Efforts by villagers from Malake Island in Rakiraki led to the arrest of a 25year old man from Caubati who allegedly broke into a house belonging to a 55 year old woman near the Malake Landing in Rakiraki on Monday morning.
The accused allegedly stole a vehicle from Nawanawa in Nadera on Sunday night, and on Monday morning he was involved in an accident near Malake Landing.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said he allegedly ran away from the scene of the accident where his car had veered off the road, and broke into the victim’s house and stole assorted items.
The victim raised the alarm and some men from Malake Island who were near the landing chased after the suspect into a sugar cane field when Police officers who were conducting community visitations nearby arrived.
The suspect was arrested by the men after a search through the cane fields all items alleged to have been stolen were recovered.
The accused has been charged with burglary and theft and will be produced at the Rakiraki Magistrates Court today.
