French Polynesia has recorded another two deaths from Covid-19 over the past 24 hours.

This brings the country’s total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic to 72.

However, infection rates have fallen with 100 new cases recorded, compared to 266 the previous day.

22 people are currently in intensive care.

The latest infections bring the total number of recorded cases since March to 13,883.

All but 62 of those were detected after the borders were reopened in July and mandatory quarantine requirements were abolished.

Meanwhile, the French Medical Association in French Polynesia has lodged a complaint following an advertisement by a group of doctors promoting the use of chloroquine as a treatment for Covid-19.

The ad was published on Facebook.

However, the doctors listed in the advertisement said they were not informed about the it.

Nédime Al Wardi, the Vice-President of the Medical Association, said publicity is strictly forbidden in medical practice.

The use of chloroquine as a remedy for Covid-19 had been promoted by controversial French professor Dr Didier Raoult.
