33 households of 165 people including the elderly, parents, youths and children of Tuvavatu settlement in Rakiraki will now access proper electricity with the touch of switch after the commissioning $480,000 rural electrification project today.
After commissioning the project, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Rural and Maritime Development, Jone Usamate said accessing electricity improves the livelihood of every Fijian, young and old and its effects multiplies to contribute to the achievement of our development goals.
“Government have set ourselves a national target of ensuring that all Fijians have access to electricity by 2021.”
“Over the past five years, Government has provided funding to the tune of around $224million towards the energy sector in which 70cent of every dollar spent in the sector have gone directly to rural electrification.”
More than 25,000 Fijian households have benefited from this rural electrification project.
