The American presidential election is hanging in the balance with a handful of closely contested states set to decide the outcome in the coming hours or days.
This morning Donald Trump’s campaign said it would seek a recount of votes in one of those states – Wisconsin – hours before CNN and AP projected Democrat Joe Biden had won its 10 electoral college votes.
Late on election night Trump held press conference where he falsely claimed he won the election, declared it a “major fraud”, and said he would ask the Supreme Court to stop any more votes being counted. The president provided no evidence to back up his claim of fraud and did not explain how he would fight the results at the Supreme Court, which does not hear direct challenges.
Earlier, Joe Biden said he was confident of winning once the votes were counted, and urged patience. “We believe we’re on track to win this election,” Biden said in his home state of Delaware.
