Researchers at the University of the South Pacific (#USP) recently gained technical skills in DNA extraction and genetic analyses as part of training activities overseen by #USC #TAR.
USC TAR researcher, Dr Monal Lal, is working with Epeli Loganimoce, a Coastal Fisheries Research Assistant, under the Pacific-European Union Marine Partnership Programme (#PEUMP), and USP PhD Candidate, Kelly Brown.
Epeli’s research is examining the status of the coastal octopus fishery in Fiji, while Kelly’s thesis research is assessing the population genetic structure and diversity of sandfish in the country.
Both projects involve molecular components; and Epeli and Kelly have received training in sample collection, preservation and DNA extraction for genetic analyses.
This training activity is one of several technical exchange arrangements operating across several #USC #TAR and #ACIAR research projects, facilitating collaborative research and capacity building between partner institutions and countries.
