Tourism Fiji hosted its sixth webinar session in Namaka, Nadi that featured the Fiji Hotel & Tourism Association (FHTA) and representatives from the Ministry of Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations.
The session allowed industry partners an opportunity to ask questions regarding their current Human Resources issues with COVID-19. Director of Marketing for Tourism Fiji, Emma Campbell said, “Tourism Fiji is happy that we’ve been able to create a platform that allows useful information to get our industry in this challenging time.
We welcomed 150 attendees at today’s webinar and there were many new faces that have not joined us before. This tells us that the topic was relevant to a broader scope of people in our industry.”
Earlier this week FHTA hosted 5 face-to-face information sessions with their members and invited the Ministry of Employment to attend and answer questions. FHTA Chief Executive Officer Fantasha Lockington explained, “We appreciate the Ministry’s involvement and support and I’m glad that they now have a better understanding about the tough time our tourism industry is having now. Its an emotional time for our industry and I wanted the Ministry to meet with our members and hear their plight.”
“This Wednesday (May 20) was International Human Resources Day and we would like to recognise the contribution that HR is making right now in striving to be compliant with our national Employment Relations Act through these unprecedented times” she said.
HR and IR issues raised at the webinar included proper procedures during the current COVID-19 crisis regarding redundancies, leave without pay, unpaid leave, accrual of annual leave and questions regarding contractual agreements.
Ms Lockington said the session was necessary as their members were keen for answers directly from the Ministry of Employment, Productivity & Industrial Relations. She says she will continue to follow up on all the issues raised and will be submitting a report to the Ministry of Employment for their consideration and action.
Tourism Fiji hosts regular webinars which are communicated through their e-newsletter.
