Fifty-eight year old, Rakesh Singh of West Hill View Farms located at Vakabuli, Paipai in Lautoka has been farming #pineapples with his father since he was a small boy.
A top pineapple exporter during his time, Rakesh is keen to re-connect to new markets after supply to hotels and resorts stalled during COVID-19.Mr Singh has 15 acres of land farmed with smooth cayenne variety of pineapples apart from small-scale cash crops.
His son, Kirit Singh saw potential of their pineapple farm and is assisting his father to establish markets to export.
“We have one of the best pineapples grown here in Fiji with the right climate.
I am keen to assist my father to connect with markets and take lead in the family business as he is reaching his retirement. We are grateful to Investment Fiji who are assisting us to find markets and connect with approval agencies in terms of requirements to export pineapples.”
Investment Fiji’s Regional Development team in Lautoka and the Investment & Trade team in Suva made a site visit to West Hill View Farms and facilitated an introductory meeting with a foreign distributor centre in Lautoka on export process.
Mr Rakesh with his wealth of knowledge on pineapple growing and innovative thinking from his son, plans to teach other pineapple farmers on the cultivation of pineapples and proper farm management to produce premium quality pineapples.“
We have already started on knowledge sharing with the farmers on proper pineapple farming without the use of chemicals. I think with the right mind-set and required certifications, Fiji can grow big on pineapple exports in the near future.”
Investment Fiji is assisting the local farmer to connect with new markets, advice on export requirements and facilitation of the business.
