The Nasinu football team is hopeful they’ll be out to cause more upsets in the Battle of the Giants tournament this week.
The southerners defied all odds to beat Nadi in the final round of the pool games last week, to book its place in the semi finals, other teams that sneaked through were Lautoka, Suva and Labasa.
Heading into the final round of pool games of this year’s Inkk Mobile BOG tournament, six teams were in contention to book their spot in the knockout stages.
With Games shifted to Lautoka’s Churchill Park, teams were fully focused to ensure they meet their targets.
First up was Nasinu against the Fact Champions Nadi. The former giant killers needed a win and they did not disappoint their fans, both teams were locked at nil – all in the first half – missing opportunities as poor finishing let them down.
Nasinu proved to be the better team in the second half as hardworking Nasoni Mereke opened the account in the 65th minute of play. Nadi had the chance to level scores in the 77th minute after Jeshal Kumar was brought down inside the Nasinu box.
Nadi defender Ame Votoniu stepped up to take the kick from the penalty spot took, but the brilliance of Nasinu goalkeeper, Josaia Ratu saved the day for the Southerners. Final score was Nasinu 1 – Nadi nil.
Then it was Labasa who came up against Tavua. Midfielders Ravinesh Karan Singh and Dennis Ifunaoa netted Labasa’s goals in the 13th and 36th minute of the first half to give them a 2 – nil victory. The Babasiga Lions ended their campaign in group competition with seven points and have not conceded a goal so far in the tournament.
The third match saw Lautoka take on Rewa. The Blues already had booked their place in the semi final while Rewa needed a win. The Delta Tigers started strongly against the host’s after Setareki Hughes found the back of the net in the first half. Constant pressure from the Blues paid off on the stroke of halftime after Shivam Naidu managed to beat Rewa’s goalkeeper Joela Biuvanua.
The final of the evening was between reigning BOG champs Ba and Suva. The Men In Black needed a win while Suva were just going for a draw.
The end result was in favour of Suva as the match ended in a nil-all draw.
The first semi final will see Labasa take on Nasinu and Lautoka to meet Rewa.
