An active trough of low pressure lies slow moving just to the northeast of the country.

Associated cloud and rain is expected to affect the eastern parts of the Group from later today.

For Lau and Lomaiviti group, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, eastern part and interior of Viti Levu:

Expect cloudy periods with some showers. Isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls especially in the afternoon or evening.

Showers possibly increasing to rain and becoming heavy from later today.

Elsewhere, expect fine weather apart from afternoon or evening showers and isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls.

Isolated heavy falls may lead to localised flooding of low lying areas.

Meanwhile, Tropical Depression, TD10F was located just to the east of the Lau Group and is expected to remain to the east of Fiji while moving southwards.

TD10F has a low potential to develop into a tropical cyclone over Fiji waters. Associated fresh to strong winds is expected to affect the Lau and Lomaiviti group. (Fresh winds: small trees in leaf to sway, strong winds: larger tree branches moving and whistling in wires).

Tropical Depression, TD09F had intensified further and upgraded into a category 1 tropical cyclone, TC Oma at 9pm on Tuesday night (last night). As of 9am today, TC Oma has upgraded further into a category 2 tropical cyclone. TC Oma (Cat 2) is currently located just to the northwest of Vanuatu and is NOT EXPECTED to move towards Fiji.

In anticipation of this, the following alert and warning remains in force; A “Heavy Rain Alert” remains in force for Lau and Lomaiviti Group, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the eastern part and interior of Viti Levu

A “Strong Wind Warning” remains in force for Lau Waters, Koro Sea and Kadavu Passage. For Lau waters, Koro Sea and Kadavu Passage: Mariners can expect easterly winds 20 to 25 knots with rough seas and moderate southeast swells.

Poor visibility in areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms which may produce hazardous conditions for operators of small crafts.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid sailing in these conditions.

For the rest of Fiji Waters: Expect easterly to southwest winds 15 to 20 knots with moderate to rough seas and moderate southeast swells. Poor visibility in areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms.
