From today all single use plastic bags will be banned from ANZ Stadium, according to Fiji Sports Council CEO, Litiana Loabuka.

Mrs Loabuka said that there has been growing concern by the Council at the increased number of single use plastic bags that are left in the Stadium following an event.

“Not only do they reach into corners of the ANZ Stadium where they are difficult to remove, but we are also discovering that they are sometimes found inside our machinery and drains, and that has affected operations.”

Specially designed collection bins will be placed inside and around the Stadium in strategic locations to encourage spectators to get rid of the single use plastic bags, before they enter the venue.

In addition, said Mrs Loabuka, the campaign will include banners and billboards, visible when approaching the Stadium and strengthening the message when spectators are inside.

“It is our commitment to protect and maintain our properties whether it is the ANZ Stadium or the soon to be opened expanded Vodafone Arena.

It goes without saying, banning single use plastic bags reinforces our commitment for an operationally safer and clean environment,” she concluded.
