The Vodafone Premier League (VPL) 2020 battle continues to intensify as FoodCity Rewa maintains its top position on the table following the resumption of the second round last weekend.
In the top of the table clash, Rewa and Ba shared a point each following a 1-1 draw at the Fiji FA Academy ground in Ba which saw the Delta Tigers remaining on top with 17 points after eight matches, one point ahead of the reigning champion Ba who has 16 points in the bag.
Suva, after its impressive 3-1 win over Labasa, remains on third place with 15 points while Nadi, after a convincing 5-0 win over Navua, has moved up to fourth position with 12 points.
Lautoka and Nasinu, who also played to a 1-1 draw last weekend, are on fifth and sixth place with 11 and eight points respectively. Labasa is on seventh place with seven points while Navua remains at the bottom of the table with four points.
For Rewa head coach Marika Rodu, the second round is basically the repetition of things they have been applying till the Punjas Battle of the Giants.
He said all teams will try to bring in offensive strategy in the second round but for Rewa, improving their defense is more important.
“We will continue to work on the previous things we have been working on, aerobic endurance, repeating some of our defensive works and offensive circuits,” he said.
Rodu said the focus is more on team defense.
“Even in the under-pressure situations, we need to remain calm in defense.
“If we take good positioning and recognize our role in defense, I think we should be okay.
“Good example is we mismanaged the first two minutes against Ba and we conceded a silly goal.”
In its preparation for the match against Nasinu this week, Rodu said the giant-killers will pose a threat to them.
“I saw their game last weekend. They were fast but sometimes not accurate, and they can still pose a threat to us if we are disorganized.”
The Rewa vs Nasinu match will kick off at 2pm this Sunday at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori while Navua will host Labasa on Saturday at 7pm at Uprising Sports Facilities in Pacific Harbour, Suva will host Ba at ANZ Stadium in Suva at 3pm while Nadi and Lautoka will battle at 1pm at Prince Charles Park in Nadi on Sunday.
