About 234 villagers of Nakanacagi in Macuata, Vanua Levu will benefit from the $70 thousand borehole water project, recently commissioned by the Minister of Lands and Minerals Resources, Ashneel Sudhakar at three different areas on Vanua Levu this week.

Sudhakar says this is inline with the Government’s commitment towards achieving its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, by ensuring that all Fijians have access to clean water and sanitation.

“The beneficiaries of the projects are residents of Dreka Settlement in Cakaudrove, civil servants at the Lekutu Government Station in Bua and Nakanacagi villagers in Macuata,”  Sudhakar says.
“Fijians in these communities all had a reason to celebrate as their water woes is now a thing of the past.”
Sudhakar says that while honoring their commitment to the United Nations through the SDG’s, as well as the right of every Fijian to quality, safe and clean drinking water under Fiji’s Constitution, the Government will continue with its work to ensuring that all Fijians share an equal advantage to such access.
“The Government has done their part in providing a reliable system which would supply water to you, but the onus is on how you would utilise this resource wisely,” Sudhakar says.
“I plead with you all, not to leave taps running and to save water whenever you can, because like other resources, water from your borehole might one day run out, leaving you with water issues.”
Santa Wati, 71, of Dreka Settlement says she is grateful for the new water project.
“Prior to the borehole which now supplies our water, we relied on a well and a lake. I have to walk for quite a distance to get to the well but now I get to access water in my home,” Wati says.
“Water is a necessity and I am grateful to the Government for ensuring that we too have access to clean and safe drinking water.”

The three newly commissioned boreholes will directly benefit 342 people.
