Fijian Minister for Agriculture, Dr Mahendra Reddy is hosting the inaugural China-Pacific Island Countries Agriculture Minister’s Meeting in Nadi with representatives from China, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Niue, Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu.
Minister Reddy said Pacific island countries anticipated support from China to boost production and supply; and to open up their market and assist Pacific suppliers to access the Chinese market.
“As an outcome of this meeting we look forward to the adoption of a declaration to be known as the “Nadi Declaration of China and Pacific Island States on Agricultural Cooperation”,” Dr. Reddy said.
“This declaration should be focused on production and trade creation rather than trade diversion between China and the Pacific.”
China is represented by His Excellency the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Han Changfu, who held a roundtable discussion with Minister Reddy and regional agricultural ministers prior to the main meeting.
Under the theme “Seizing the opportunity of jointly contributing to the Belt and Road Initiative”, agriculture and fisheries officials from the region seek to advance practical agricultural cooperation between China and Pacific Island Countries.
