Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Industry Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama visited the cane farming communities in Nasarawaqa, Bua and Vucitoka Settlement in Seaqaqa.
The two communities are among a few other cane farming groups in Fiji who have worked with the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) through a joint-venture to plant cane in large-scale to help increase cane production.
The Prime Minister told the community members that the Fijian Government has bigger plans in place to benefit the Industry and such joint venture was aimed at further boosting cane production.
During this 2020-2021 financial year, the Ministry of Sugar Industry has implemented seven programs which are aimed at assisting farmers with increasing their cane production.
The programs are Cane Access Road, Sugarcane Development & Farmers’ Assistance, Sugar Stabilisation Fund, New Farmers Assistance Scheme, Fertiliser Subsidy, Weedicide Subsidy; and Cane Cartage. Prime Minister Bainimarama encouraged community members to “till their land” and plant more sugarcane.
The Prime Minister also took time out to listen to the issues and concerns raised by community members.
Meanwhile, the Labasa FSC Mill management hosted the Prime Minister to a tour of the mill where he was briefed on its progress.
