Geneva — Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama met the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Ms. Michelle Bachelet along the margins of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The Prime Minister congratulated Ms. Michelle Bachelet on her appointment as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and assured her of Fiji’s full support towards her leadership of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The High Commissioner in turn congratulated Fiji on its inclusion into the UNHRC, the first country in the Pacific Islands to be elected into the Council as a member.

Prime Minister Bainimarama gave his reassurance that as a first Pacific Island nation Council member, the UN High Commissioner can count on Fiji’s support towards the work of the Council and it’s initiatives on climate change, environment, and internally displaced persons.

Whilst holding bilateral talks with the High Commissioner of the UN Human Rights Council, the Prime Minister took the opportunity to share best practices and initiatives undertaken domestically to demonstrate Fijis unwavering support towards the protection of Human Rights. The Prime Minister also shared the progress made by Fiji since 2014 in the ratification of UN Convention Against Torture (UNCAT), Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (CPRD), International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

The Prime Minister in thanking the UN High Commissioner for meeting with him, reaffirmed Fijis commitment and efforts to making the Council more efficient, more inclusive and more representative. He said “Fiji will remain a strong advocate for the work and mechanisms of the Council and you can count on my full support in carrying out our pledged commitments and to the goals you have set yourself for the tenure of your appointment”.

The Prime Minister is in Geneva to attend the 40th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, which is taking place from February 25 to March 22 at the Palais des Nations.
