Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama commissioned the Bio-Engineering Coastal Protection Project in Viro village, Ovalau.
The new hybrid seawall represents more than just an attempt to keep the ocean from encroaching on land in the village.
Prime Minister Bainimarama, while speaking at the event, said that the need to protect coastal communities is urgent.
“Our need to protect coastal communities is urgent, and so we will continue to pursue nature-based solutions—either alone or in combination with man-made structures,” said the Prime Minister.
“This is the way we pick up the pace to reach more communities, more quickly, and with solutions that have multiple benefits.”
The seawall was completed in 4 months, is the first of its type to be implemented by the Ministry for Waterways and will be a model for government to use in the coming months and years especially for maritime areas.
