As the newly appointed Regional Director of the World Health Organization -Dr. Takeshi Kasai in his inaugural visit to Fiji, took time to visit the Fiji National University today to address some of the key highlights of the Health system in Fiji and the Region.
In his presentation, Kasai also shared on key areas identified in the Region such as on health security, non-communicable diseases, ageing, environment and climate change.
He also spoke on how WHO and FNU can work together in strengthening their relationships in key areas in the long-run.
For FNU the visit by Kasai is a significant one according to College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Dean at FNU-Dr William May:
“One of the big areas that he mentioned and also his area of interest is Health systems, this is common across not only in Pacific Island countries but throughout the world. I think its strengthening our Health system to be able to respond to the current Health issues and emerging Health issues. It’s an area of interest for us apart NCD’s and climate change and its also a Research area for us”
The Hiroshima-Born Kasai was in Fiji on a 2 day visit, also took a tour the Public Health Campus in Tamavua this afternoon. He will serve a 5-year Term as WHO’s Regional Director.
