The Chairman of the National Fire Authority (NFA) Board, after the
NFA Board Meeting on Thursday, 14th May 2020, announced the
appointment of Mr Puamau Tagivetaua Sowane as the new Chief Executive
Officer of the National Fire Authority (NFA) for a term of three years with
effect from 18th May, 2020.
This followed a stringent selection process and making relevant
recommendations to the Honorable Minister for Local Government, Housing &
The National Fire Authority was very happy with the number of
applicants that expressed keen interest in the position of Chief Executive
Officer and under the guidance of Recruitment Consultants, Pricewaterhouse Coopers,
the interviews were conducted, after which relevant recommendations were made
by the Board to the Hon Minister in compliance to the requirements of the National
Fire Service Act, 1994.
NFA thanked the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development Hon Premila Kumar for the endorsement of the recommendation.
Mr Sowane’s appointment comes at a very crucial phase in the
reforms of the NFA as NFA continues to drive the implementation of its Capital
Projects in line with Government’s intent for NFA and will embark on its new
Strategic Plan for the next five years from 2020 to 2025 in alignment to
Government’s 5 years and 20-years National Development Plan.
Mr Sowane holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and
has served as Deputy Secretary in both the Ministry of Infrastructure &
Transport and the Ministry of Employment, Productivity & Industrial
Relations. He has more than 20 years’ extensive
experience in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
Mr Sowane’s extensive experience and knowledge will contribute
immensely towards NFA’s journey for the achievement of its key strategies as
highlighted in the National Fire Authority Strategic Plan for the next five
years, to realise the delivery of the best emergency management service to the
people of Fiji.
The Board Chairman, Mr John O’Connor said: “The transformation that is currently taking
place at NFA and the milestone achievements so far are indicative of the
emerging and new modern professional emergency management service agency that
will support Government’s National Development Plans, the aspirations of the
Business Community, Stakeholders and most importantly all Fijians in the short
and long term”.
Mr Sowane’s appointment will be a step towards realizing NFA’s commitment
to maintain good governance, discipline and professionalism.
The NFA Board wishes Mr Sowane all the best and trusts that he
will continue the successful implementation of NFA’s reforms and the roll out
of the new Strategic Plan 2020-2025 for the effective provision and delivery of
emergency management services to the people of Fiji.
Mr Sowane replaces Mr. Manasa Lesuma who is currently serving as
the Permanent Secretary for Defence, National Security and Policing.
The NFA Board also at its meeting yesterday thanked Mrs Mileta
Seniroqa who has acted in the position since Mr. Lesuma had resigned in March
