“Citizens of Fiji are struggling and need help. “

The statement was made by the opposition member Niko Nawaikula while proposing an establishment of a special committee to review the cost of living amid the COVID-19 crisis.

The government, however claims the opposition members are using the current crisis for their own political agenda.

Opposition Member of Parliament Niko Nawaikula called for a committee to review the cost of living as people struggle to put food on the table due to the impacts of COVID-19.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says there is no need for a committee and added resources should be used wisely.

NFP Leader Biman Prasad says people below the poverty line are most impacted and suggested that the VAT imposed on basic food items be reviewed.

Meanwhile, the government says the COVID-19 response budget and the FNPF Superannuation fund are measures in place to address the issue with the cost of living.

The motion was defeated in parliament.
