Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Hon. Jone Usamate is currently on a four day tour to the Northern Division to familiarise himself with the Ministry’s projects and to meet with the Lands North Department staff. He also attended the Great North Seafood solar opening. Through his Northern tour, Minister Usamate hopes to be able to identify bottlenecks in the system and address issues related to the Ministry’s service delivery in the North.
Minister Usamate has encouraged members of the public to make use of this opportunity and encourages those who wish to raise their grievances, to do so as he will be visiting some villages and communities during his four day Northern tour.
“Through this tour, we are making that opportunity available, so members of the public are encouraged to make use of this opportunity,” he said. He said this was a very important trip for his ministry to make because they are there to help the people of Fiji.
“Our main focus is to deliver better service to the people of Fiji, to make a difference in their lives,” he said. Minister Usamate during his site visit to Nawailevu Bauxite mine, which is under rehabilitation, thanked the Aurum Exploration Fiji Limited Mine Manager, Mr. Benson Yee and Director Mr. Dereck Chiu for the great work the company did in rehabilitating the mined area.
“The company has planted approximately 160,000 pine trees which will benefit the iTaukei landowners in the near future. This is an example of value adding related to mining with the mine rehabilitation taking into account the post-mining land use needs of the landowners,” Hon. Minister added.
Minister was also impressed with the effective and workable collaboration between Aurum Exploration and Mineral Resource Department (which is the regulatory agency for the local mining sector), in the mining and rehabilitation model effected at Nawailevu and Naibulu Bauxite Mines.
