The Minister for Local Government, Hon. Premila Kumar, earlier in the week visited proposed mini market sites in Suva.
The Minister stated that the site visit was important, as it provided the opportunity to see first-hand the functionality of the current market and how the new market plan will be on the ground to address vendors’ needs and to discuss the construction phases of each market.
“The site visit was crucial. I was able to understand the surrounding and the market plan proposed for the three market sites in Flagstaff, Raiwaqa and Mead Road,” said Minister Kumar.
The Minister added that there was a need to develop mini markets outside the Central Business Districts (CBD) areas, as it would reduce congestion within the markets, traffic on the roads and at the same time, make it convenient for those living near these mini markets.
“We all know that big markets such as Suva, Laqere and Nausori are always full during the weekend, especially Saturdays. So by decentralizing these markets, we are decreasing traffic congestion,” Minister Kumar stated.
The Minister during the site visit was accompanied by the team of Special Administrators Suva, led by the Chairman Isikeli Tikoduadua. The construction of the proposed market sites will commence in December 2020.
