A former Ministry of Housing and Community Development employee was charged in seven (7) cases of alleged corruption relating to the Millennium Development land scam alongside a Justice of Peace in the Nausori Magistrates Court on 30 October 2020.
The Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) charged Valami Koro with one (1) count each of Conspiracy to Defraud – Obtaining a Gain, General Dishonesty – Obtaining a Gain, four (4) counts of Falsification of Documents and three (3) counts of Soliciting and Accepting an Advantage.
It is alleged that while working as an Assistant Technical Officer with the Ministry, he falsified and issued letters approving the construction of homes to seven (7) different people without the consent or authority of the Permanent Secretary, in order to obtain money from them FICAC also charged Justice of Peace Joseph Percy Traill with one (1) count each of
Conspiracy to Defraud – Obtaining a Gain and General Dishonesty – Obtaining a Gain.
He is alleged to have work with Koro to show a vacant piece of land at Millennium Development along with the fake approval letter in order to obtain money from an individual between June and July this year.
FICAC Senior State Counsel Sanjana Datt appeared for Prosecution and confirmed to the Court that both the individuals had received their first phase disclosures.
They were released on bail with strict bail conditions.
The matter was adjourned to 20 November 2020.
FICAC reminds members of the public that it is not too late to come forward if they have also been scammed by perpetrators promising them land for money and that they can lodge their complaints by calling toll free line 1322 or visiting the FICAC office nearest them in either Suva, Lautoka or Labasa.
