Journalists
and media workers are crucial in helping people make informed decisions.

The theme for the World Press Freedom Day aligns with the COVID-19 pandemic ‘Journalism Without Fear or Favour.’

Fijian Media Association, General Secretary, Stanley
Simpson said today is a day to remember the important work journalists do to inform
the public.

This role he says is especially critically at
this time with the world facing the COVID-19 pandemic.

Simpson says
people should continue to rely on the media for factual and reliable
information, especially during this crisis.

He also
called on colleagues in the industry to uphold the media code of ethics at all
times.

Meanwhile,
Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres called on governments and
others to guarantee that journalists can do their jobs throughout the COVID-19
pandemic and beyond.

Guterres thanked the media for providing facts and analysis; for holding leaders – in every sector – accountable; and for speaking truth to power.
