A step-father has been sentenced to 13 years and one imprisonment for raping his 12-year-old stepdaughter.

The court heard that on the 17th of July last year, the man’s step-daughter was asleep with her sister in a bedroom when he raped and indecently assaulted her.

He then carried her to the living room and continued to sexually assault her.

Passing his judgment, Justice Sunil Sharma said it’s the duty of the Court to protect children from sexual exploitation of any kind which is why the law has imposed life imprisonment as the maximum penalty.

He said the courts in this country have time and again expressed its revulsion by handing down long term imprisonment sentences, yet people are not taking heed.

Justice Sharma said this is yet another sad case of a child becoming a victim to a matured adult from within the same household.

The perpetrator will have to serve a period of 11 years before he is eligible for parole.
