The Malaysian High Commission this evening organised an official program to commemorate Malaysia’s 63rd Independence Day and 57th Malaysia Day. 

The program was attended by Fijian President His Excellency the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konusi Konrote, the Fijian Prime Minister, Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama, and the regional, bilateral and multilateral development partners.

The event recognised and commended Fiji and Malaysia’s diplomatic relations which was established in 1977. Fiji’s Prime Minister Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama had earlier congratulated Malaysia on the occasion of the country’s 63rd Independence Day anniversary. 

PM Bainimarama in a congratulatory message to his Malaysian counterpart Honourable YAB Tan Sri Dato’ Haji Muhyiddin bin Haji Mohd. Yassin, conveyed the Fijian Government’s and the people of Fiji’s best wishes to the Government of Malaysia and its people on the occasion of the 63rd Independence Day. 

The Head of the Fijian Government reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to enhance  bilateral cooperation with Malaysia for the mutual benefit of both nations. High Commissioner of Malaysia to Fiji, His Excellency Mr. Ilham Tuah Illias commended the Fijian Government for its inclusive partnership with Malaysia, which has seen the relations of the two countries reaching greater heights.

 He said as Fiji prepares to celebrate its 50th Independence anniversary next month, Malaysia looks forward to upscaling its support to Fiji in the many development aspirations directed towards Fiji’s own development and that of the region. 

High Commissioner Ilham Tuah said that Malaysia will work with Fiji and the region and international organisations to forge stronger cooperation to cope with the challenges brought by COVID-19 and climate change. 

“I wish to congratulate Fiji and especially to the Honourable Prime Minister and the Fiji team for the swift actions taken to combat the pandemic in the country which has saved lives and we are able to live and work peacefully without fear of COVID-19 in this country,” he said. He further stated that Malaysia is proud of its friendship and collaboration with Fiji, which is based on the values of mutual respect and understanding.
