A man has been sentenced to 17 years and 4 months imprisonment with a non-parole period of 14 years by the Lautoka High Court for the rape and indecent assault of his adolescent step daughter.

Justice Daniel Goundar highlighted in his sentencing that the incident arose in 2016. The victim complained to her mother, the court heard that the mother did not believe the girl and mocked her.

The court heard that the girl than complained to the police after school and her mother was called to the police station.

The mother of the victim convinced the police and a social welfare officer that the victim’s character was questionable. The court noted that police did not register the victim’s report.

Following the indent the accused raped the victim on five separate occasions in her home.

Justice Goundar said there is virtually no explanation for the accused’s conduct and that his defence was based on thin ground.

A permanent domestic violence restraining order with no contact and non – molestation condition was issued against the accused to protect the victim in the future.
