Students from Koro Island will be part of the “High School Students Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day 2018” in Japan.

Permanent Secretary for Education-Alison Burchell said the selection of Koro High School to represent Fiji is important, given their experience on the devastation caused by TC Winston including tidal waves that struck parts of Koro Island.

She hopes they will share their experiences and at the same time learn from the experiences of other students from different countries.

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Masahiro Omura hopes the summit will provide the students the opportunity to acquire knowledge on the threat of earthquakes and tsunamis.

The Japanese Embassy hosted a send-off Reception for the students earlier this week.

The Koro students will also be joined by student from Tuvalu.

A total of 487 participants from around the world are expected to attend the two day Summit next week.
