The ILO Director for Pacific Island Countries, Mr Matin Karimli visited the Fijian village of Narewa where he got first hand information on the situation of redundant tourism workers, as part of the survey organized by Fiji Trades Union Congress-FTUC and National Union of Hospitality Catering & Tourism Industries Employees at the village.

The village head and redundant workers shared their stories of work in the five star hotels on Denarau Island and their current engagement in farming and fishing to sustain themselves.

The villagers are also the landowning clan of Denarau Island and provided the majority of the workforce for the hotels on the island.
