The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) is advising the general public to take heed of the heavy rain warning and flood alert that has been issued from the Fiji Met office.
People living in low lying areas are to exercise caution as heavy rain continues. Families are also urged to prepare accordingly should the need to evacuate arise.
The NDMO is urging motorists to take extra precaution as landslides/landslips are likely to happen if heavy rain continues.
Mariners are also reminded that a Damaging Heavy Swell Warning is now in force for the southern coastal areas of Mamanuca group, Southwestern Viti Levu (Coral coast to Pacific Harbour), Kadavu, Beqa, and Vatulele. A Damaging Heavy Swell Warning is now in force for waters of Southwest Viti Levu and Mamanuca waters and Kadavu passage.
Members of the public can contact the following agencies for more information: 1. Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) by phone on 5720 for the road status in the country. 2. Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) can be contacted by phone on 132 333 or 913 for enquiries. 3. The National Fire Authority (NFA) can be contacted by phone on 910 and the Fiji Police Force on 911 for emergency situations. 4.
In case of landslides, the public is advised to first contact the Mineral Resources Department on 338 1611 or the NDMO on 915 before any steps are taken to clear the slip.
The public is also advised to continually monitor weather bulletins and forecasts on the radio or on the Fiji Meteorological Services Website at www.met.gov.fj and to listen to the radio for further updates.
