Italian Filippo Ganna, the newly-crowned world time trial champion, has continued his fine run of form by winning the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia.
Ganna, victorious at Imola in the recent world championships and winner of the Giro’s opening time trial, gave his Ineos-Grenadiers team something to cheer about on the 225km trek from Mileto when he rode away from a group of three breakaway riders in the category one climb to Montescuro.
Portugal’s Joao Almeida took third place to retain the overall leader’s Maglia Rosa.
Meanwhile race Organisers have cast doubt over the cause of yesterday’s fourth stage crash which left a rider with a broken back.
It was claimed the downdraft from a helicopter flying too low moved roadside barriers into the path of riders causing the crash.
However the BBC says an “external factor” may have moved them.
