Former Governor of the Reserve Bank and Leader of the Unity Fiji Party Savenaca Narube says government has missed the opportunity to clean up government spending by removing wastage and ineffective programs.

Narube was responding to the COVID-19 Budget delivered last night.

Narube says many measures were aimed at stimulating the economy with tax holidays, purchase of fixed assets, stamp duties and write offs.

While these are important, he says the pressing priorities right now are saving lives and providing relief to the affected families.

Narube says the additional budget to Health of $40 million is grossly inadequate because we don’t know the severity and length of the crisis, we must plan for the worst and increase the allocation to at least $100 million of which $60 million should be placed on “Requisition” under Head 50.
