An employee of the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, National Disaster Management and Meteorological Services was produced in the Labasa Magistrates Court for alleged corrupt practices in two (2) separate cases. Ms Nanise Tabani Lacanivalu was charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one (1) count each of Obtaining Financial Advantage and Falsification of Documents in both cases.
It is alleged that in November 2019, while serving with the office of the Provincial Administrator Macuata as their Assistant District Officer Macuata, the Accused did not distribute the travel allowances to the Advisory Council members and gained $350.00FJD which she was not entitled to.
She is also further alleged to have falsified acquittals and Minutes to state that the $350.00FJD was disbursed to the members and that the documents were made in her official capacity as the Assistant District Officer Macuata, with the intention of obtaining a gain.
In the second case, Ms Lacanivalu allegedly falsified duplicate copies of receipts by filling them with a lesser amount than what was written on the original receipts in order to obtain $275.00 FJD, which she was not eligible to receive. This is alleged to have taken place between May 2019 and September 2019.
FICAC State Counsel Ms Laite Bokini-Ratu informed the Court that first phase disclosures was served. The Accused was released on bail and was instructed not to: re-offend, interfere with prosecution witness and was also instructed to surrender all travel documents. Both cases were adjourned to 12 October 2020.
