The Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau addressed delegates at the 16th Annual Session of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission meeting which is currently being held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Koroilavesau said there is a need for better science, robust measures that help mitigate impacts of climate change and a general reduction to our carbon footprint.
Fiji is determined to finalise the preferred Target Reference Point in recovering the South Pacific Albacore stocks.
With the support of the FFA Secretariat, the focus now is on an overall hard limit and a split between these limits between the High Seas and Exclusive Economic Zones.
Koroilavesau said another priority is seeking to finalise a measure to implement overall hard limits which recognise Zone-Based Management, EEZ limits, data collection, and reporting requirements until a harvest strategy is agreed upon.
