THE Ministry of Fisheries new website will not only bring services closer to the people but has gone a step further to make it more interactive for its users in the rural and maritime areas.

In launching the website this afternoon, Ministry’s acting permanent secretary Naipote Katonitabua said, “A website is like an electronic brochure and a source of information that is accessed by the public 24 hours a day”.

“It is where we tell the public about what we do, what we are interested in and what we can offer,” Katonitabua.

The users of the website will be able to access information and forms as well as call headquarters in Suva should the need arise.

The Ministry’s staff in the nine stations situated in the four divisions will also be on hand to help Fijians in rural areas to access this service.

Katonitabua said the power of information technology for fisheries lies in its ability to provide a cost-effective platform for reaching out to the people and this has been realised by the unveiling of the new website.

He said this is one of the many initiatives that use information technology to contribute to the realization of the Ministry’s vision for the best “Sustainable Fisheries Sector for Our Future Generation Based on the Blue Economy”.

“ICT plays a pivotal role in the fisheries sector transformation process and governments all over the world are recognizing the potential for ICT as a fundamental pillar that drives fisheries development and creates an enabling environment for its stakeholders, be it students, fisherfolks, fisheries coastal communities or the fisheries industry players at large.”

The website was the vision of the late former permanent secretary for Ministry, Sanaila Naqali and to mark the event, his widow, Emali Naqali was invited as a special guest.

Also in attendance were the permanent secretaries for the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Salaseini Daunabuna and Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources, Malakai Finau.
