The people of Koro Island have taken a holistic approach to protect their resources for a sustainable future.
With the support of the Wildlife Conservation Society, Lomaiviti Provincial Office and key Government Ministries, 14 traditional chiefs of the 14 villages of Koro Island, have endorsed the ecosystem-based management plan today.
This is a first island scale EBM plan for Fiji. The chiefs have urged the communities to make every effort to ensure effective implementation of the plan.
The plan seeks to promote an integrated approach to enhancing the ecological value and resilience of terrestrial freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems on Koro island.
EBM aims to maintain ecosystems in a healthy, productive and resilient condition so that human needs can be met in future.
While speaking at the launch in Koro -WCS Director- Dr. Sangeeta Mangubhai says they have witnessed the heart-ache brought about TC Winston and how resilient the people of Koro were to pull through recovery.
She commended the people for their commitment to conserving the island resources.
The plan was designed by the Yaubula Management Support team on the Island through various community and stakeholder consultations undertaken between 2015 and 2018.
