The 66-year-old who was repatriated to Fiji after receiving surgical treatment in India for a long-standing cardiac condition passed away on 30 July 2020.
In a press conference this afternoon, the Minister for Health and Medical Services Ifereimi Waqainabete informed the media that the deceased was in the isolation ward at Lautoka Hospital due to complications from COVID-19.
He said the deceased contracted the virus while in India.
The Health Minister stressed that the virus is not present in Fijian communities, nor is there any risk of infection among the people of Fiji.
On behalf of his Ministry, the Minister extended his condolences to the family of the deceased.
The deceased person’s son who accompanied his father to India for medical treatment remains admitted at the Lautoka hospital.
