World Oceans Day was first introduced in 1992 to raise awareness about the crucial role of oceans as a source of food, oxygen and medicine.

Fiji also welcomed the UK government’s ’30by30′ Global Ocean Alliance’ initiative.

The Fijian Government supports the ’30by30′ initiative which will be reflected in Fiji’s upcoming National Ocean Policy.

Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says that the government looks forward to reaffirming it’s commitment.

The British High Commission remains committed proudly funding a number of ocean-related projects in the Pacific.

The Global Ocean Alliance aims to bring the rest of the world to Fiji’s benchmark, ensuring that at least 30 percent of the global ocean is assigned to marine protection by 2030.

Sayed-Khaiyum adds that the same dedication to a science is what’s driving the Fijian Government’s ongoing efforts to protect our main resources.

The Fijian Government will also be working on sustaining the nation’s sustainable fisheries and aquaculture industry and instituting policies and practices to deter illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.
