Fiji Mens Under 15 Basketballers have made a good start in the FIBA Oceania Championship in Port Moresby.

Fiji broke the hearts of host Papua New Guinea with a heart-pounding 64 to 62 victory.

Papua New Guinea’s Morea Flavo had the chance to force the game into overtime but missed a long jumper at the buzzer.

Ros Koroi had a monster double-double effort with 14 points and 21 rebounds to lead Fiji while Nalani May, Shravan Dayal and Lorima Mucunabitu chipped in 12, 11 and 10 points in that order.

Atti Bradley made spectacular baskets to the delight of the home crowd to register 14 points in PNG’s losing effort.

Fiji Mens Under 15 Basketball team will next face Australia and New Zealand.

In the second game, Australia bucked off a scintillating start from Samoa to take a comfortable 90-49 win with a tremendous second-half effort.

Meanwhile, New Zealand dominated Guam, 131-41 in the opening game of the FIBA Oceania U15 Oceania Championship.

The FIBA U15 Oceania Championship is the first step in the qualification phase of the 2020 FIBA U17 World Cup.

The top two finishers will qualify to the FIBA U16 Asian Championship while top three and four will advance to Division B.
