Fiji has marked its successful Chairmanship of the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction  Support Group following its leadership at the UN Human Rights Council and for playing the vice presidency role at UNHRC Bureau.
 
Upon the successful completion of Fiji’s chairmanship on UNDRR for 1 year, the role was handed over to Finland last week.
 
Fiji’s leadership role on UNDRR Support Group has been coordinated by Fiji’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Nazhat Shameem Khan and the team at the Fiji Mission in Geneva.
Ambassador Khan congratulated the incoming Chair of UNDRR, Finland and Fiji also expressed its continued commitment to supporting the chairmanship throughout the year ahead. 
 
In reflecting on Fiji’s successful leadership,  Kirsi Madi, Director of the UN Office of DRR conveyed her highest gratitude and appreciation to Fiji for its excellent commitment and passion in steering the UNDRR Support Group forward.
 
Ms Madi said Fiji had a very fruitful term with all its priorities as set out at the start of its tenure as Chair and UNDRR will continue to count on Fiji for support and leadership in the future.”
 
Whilst chairing the last session, as Chair of the UNDRR Support Group meeting in Geneva this week, Ambassador Khan reiterated Fiji’s commitment and leadership in driving the objectives of UNDRR. She reflected on key highlights of Fiji’s successful leadership in the organization of the Regional Platforms for Disaster Risk Reduction as well as the successful hosting of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Geneva.
 
Ambassador Khan also thanked all Member States for their support and commitment during Fiji’s tenure as Chair.
 
First Secretary at the Fiji Mission in Geneva,  Vueti May also made a brief presentation on the topic “Fiji’s Emergency Medical Assistance Team  – From Disaster to WHO International EMT Verification,” that reinforced the concept of building a resilient community through Fiji’s Type 1 Fixed Emergency Medical Team, being the first in the Pacific.
 
The UNDRR Support Group played an active role in ensuring that the outcomes of the meetings were fed into global agendas on Climate Change and Sustainable Development.
 
Fiji’s priorities in its tenure as the Chair of the UNDRR Support Group were on the need for greater coherence in the implementation of the Sendai Framework, Paris Agreement and Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and strong support for the efforts of UNDRR to promote its synergy.
 
It also focused on strengthening coherence between different Global Agendas in order to create a sustainable and resilient future for all.
 
The above priorities will remain relevant for UNDRR particularly in the buildup towards the Climate Summit to be held in New York in September 2019.
