The Fiji Geospatial Information team of the Ministry has been deployed to the Ra Province for two weeks to conduct spatial data capture.
This is to supplement the existing village and settlement information currently published on Vanua GIS.
Vanua GIS is a web application that provides its users with access to Fiji’s Geospatial Information.
It has been used across government agencies to monitor land use activities and to identify potential land use by matching key related resources.
The Vanua GIS platform has also been used to track relief assistance in conjunction with the National Disaster Management Office and assisted the government during disaster preparedness and evacuation such as the Post Winston disaster period.
Spatial data that are currently been captured by the team in Ra are Religious sites, health facilities, field stations, bus bays, bus stops, taxi base, government stations, water tanks, mangrove replant, commercial centers ,village cemeteries, schools and hotels
This is an ongoing project whereby; Ba, Lau, Tailevu South, Nadroga/Navosa and part of Rewa Province has been covered. The Ministry is looking at covering Beqa, Naitasiri, Tailevu North and Levuka in the coming months.
The Ministry would like to commend the Ra Provincial Office and the Mata ni Tikinas and Turaga ni Koros of various villages in Ra for assisting our team collect data. The team is currently based at the Ra Provincial Hall – Nanukuloa Village.
