The Ambassador of the United States of America to Fiji, His Excellency Joseph Cella paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister Honourable Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama. 

The call enabled a comprehensive dialogue on the innovative engagements that Fiji and the United States will closely pursue in rebuilding economy and livelihoods.  

PM Bainimarama conveyed the Fijian Government’s appreciation to the United States for its commitment and support to Fiji and the region in addressing the double burden of COVID19 pandemic and climate change crisis. In reaffirming Fiji’s partnership with United States, PM Bainimarama said that transparency, multilateralism, and global solidarity is crucial for charting a concerted approach to containing COVID and redouble efforts for recovery. 

Ambassador Cella congratulated PM Bainimarama for his decisive leadership in keeping Fiji COVID contained and reinforced the United States support towards the Fijian Government endeavor’s to revive the Fijian economy. Ambassador Cella said,

“I am grateful for Prime Minister Bainimarama’s strong and transparent leadeship exemplifies further the whole of government of Fiji’s engagement on the front lines of this infernal and costly plague.”

 In realising this shared commitment, the Embassy of the United States will work in partnership with the Fijian Government to inaugurate the newly established Community Economic Empowerment Project (CEEP) that will enhance the reach out to individuals, families and communities, in assisting them to rebuild their income-generating activities and livelihood. 

Ambassador Cella said that a key step towards achieving this would be reinstating the Peace Corps Volunteers (PCV) and coordinating consultations with Project Advisory Committee (PAC).Ambassador Cella introduced the new Country Director, Peace Corps Fiji, Ms. Kury W. Cobham given her role in coordinating the Peace Corp Volunteers in Fiji. PM Bainimarama conveyed the Fijian Government’s best wishes to Ms. Kury W. Cobham as she takes on the new role and he acknowledged the Peace Corps contribution to Fiji’s economic and social development.
