The Fiji Corrections Service and the Fiji Judiciary today convened 27 Supreme Court Hearings via Skype.

The sessions was held from 8 Corrections Centers from around Viti Levu between 10am this morning and were presided over by Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar.

This historic undertaking revealed the capability the FCS has to carry out what would hopefully become a norm for the future in order to help enhance security plus prudently managing resources and time in attending specifically to Supreme or Appeal court hearings.

During the implementation of the equipment last June made possible via funding from Government, UNDP and ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross), Justice Kumar said the system was specifically important when the presence of inmates were not required in court.

Since the implementation of the digital systems valued at over $350,000, the FCS had conducted around 17 Appeal cases via Skype.

Commissioner of Corrections Commander Francis Kean said this technology brings about operational effectiveness in the delivery of correction services to those under our care and the Judiciary.
