The Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation says the public has misunderstood the term, termination when it comes to employment.
This was reiterated by the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation Chief Executive Officer Kameli Batiweti.
Termination does not mean that an employee has been fired, it means that there is no work for the employee.
Batiweti said this after concerns were raised about the mass termination of staff due to the impacts of COVID-19.
Employers have also been warned not to take advantage of the Amended Employment Relations Act to terminate workers with a valid reason.
He revealed that due to the decline in business activity and pending fixed cost payments some businesses have no choice but to terminate employees.
The parliament passed the amendment of the Employment Relations Act last month.
