A 62-year-old father was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after he was found guilty for raping his daughter.
The man was convicted for two counts of rape.
The man’s daughter was 15 years old at the time of the offenses.
High Court Judge, Justice Salesi Temo during the sentencing said the rapist father had forced himself on the victim, even after she repeatedly told him to stop.
Justice Temo told the court that the rapist had ignored the protests and even told his daughter that ‘he was the boss of her body’.
Justice Temo said the offense of rape is viewed by the Parliament of Fiji as a serious offense as it violates the dignity of a person.
He went on to say that those who commit rape, must expect a lengthy prison sentence to restore the balance, the harmony and atonement to the victim.
Justice Temo told the man that as a father he was supposed to look after his daughter, care for her and guide her to become a confident and useful citizen of Fiji in the future.
Yet, he had abused the trust she had in him and that by doing the unthinkable, that is raping her on two separate occasions.
Justice Temo said sexual attacks on Children are becoming prevalent in our society, and anyone who rapes children must not expect mercy from the courts, and not complain of a heavy prison sentence.
The rapist has been in remand since 11 December 2018.
Justice Temo sentenced the man to 15 years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 12 years imprisonment.
A permanent Domestic Violence Order with standard non-molestation conditions has also been issued by Justice Temo for the safety of his daughter.
