The week-long ‘Litter Prevention Officers’ enforcement training – started today at the Peninsula Hotel in Suva.
Conservation Officers from different provinces are trained by the Ministry of Environment, in coordination with the I-Taukei Affairs Board – on how to enforce the Litter Act 2008.
Deputy CEO of I-Taukei Affairs Board Josefa Toganivalu says litter is the result of mostly individual behaviour choosing to be careless in the handling of waste.
Toganivalu added it is important to recognise that efforts from all stakeholders is required to address the current litter problems.
The aim of the training is also to take action in safeguarding natural resources from the impact of improper waste management.
The eleven participants from the training will be soon enforcing the Litter Act and those found to be littering in public places will be penalised.
